What is Mold?
Mold is a fungus that is present almost anywhere that there is moisture, organic particles and oxygen. Mold is essentially always around and is a common component of the everyday air we breathe both inside and outside of the home or workplace. Most mold will not pose a risk to your health or home. However, when mold spores develop in large quantities or are of a certain type, the risk to your health and the structure of your property greatly increases.
What Causes Mold to Grow?
When moisture is present and not controlled, mold can grow. For example, if there has been a slow leak coming from your kitchen drain that has gone unnoticed for quite some time, the likelihood that mold has grown and spread is very high. Mold can begin to grow within 24 hours when the conditions are suitable. Damp, dark, humid, poor ventilated, and recently flooded areas in your home or office building are more likely to develop a mold issue (think basements, crawl spaces, attics, bathrooms).
What Do I Do If I Come Across Mold?
There are basically 3 stages to the mold remediation process.
- Contact a NYS Licensed Mold Assessor. The assessor will perform the initial inspection and assessment of the space. Here is a list of mold assessors that we have worked with and recommend based on their professionalism and expertise.
- Contact a NYS Licensed Mold Remediation Company. The mold remediation company (that’s us!) will execute the actual mold removal from the property.
- Contact the NYS Licensed Mold Assessor for Clearance. Once mold remediation is complete, the mold assessor will come back to the space to ensure that the mold was removed properly.
Please note that the mold assessment CANNOT be from the same company that will carry out the mold remediation. New York State passed a law in 2016 prohibiting this in an effort to protect property owners. For more information, visit our New York State Mold Law page.
