Over our many years in the mold remediation business, we’ve heard a lot of mold myths repeated by homeowners. In order to set the record straight, below we’ve reviewed five mold remediation myths and presented the mold facts!
You Can Just Paint Over Mold
When some homeowners see mold on the wall of their bathroom or ceiling of their basement, they think they can just paint over it and be done with it. Contrary to popular belief, painting over mold does not kill it and it does not prevent it from spreading. Mold will simply grow underneath the paint and before long, reach the surface again. Drywall that has been affected by mold must be replaced, there’s no other way around it.
If It’s Not Black Mold, You’re Fine
There’s a common misconception that if mold isn’t black, it’s harmless. That simply isn't the case. There are over 100,000 kinds of mold out there in a variety of colors, shapes, textures, and sizes. White, green, brown, pink, and others colors of toxic mold exist. Don’t write them off!
A Small Amount of Mold is Harmless
Mold is a persistent predator: it thrives in humidity, it doesn’t need light to grow, and it spreads easily. That one cluster of mold you found on your wall or in your bathroom can grow and spread to the whole house before you know it. Also, just because you only see one small spot of mold on the wall doesn’t mean that’s it--you never know what’s growing on the other side of the drywall.
Once the Mold is Removed, Your Problem is Solved
Just because you’ve removed the moldy drywall doesn’t mean you’re done. There’s a reason the mold grew in the first place, and if you don’t fix the underlying issues (like a humidity problem, a persistent leak, or inconsistent ventilation) that caused the mold growth, you’re bound for it to happen again. That’s where a mold remediation company’s expertise can come in hand.
